You might feel tightness and sharp stabbing pain on or around the shin bones. It can be just on one side of your body or both sides, but it is likely shin splints. Read on in today’s post about this and another pain you may have encountered down your leg – sciatica. You’ll want to hear from Dr. Michael Horowitz, chiropractor and owner of Vancouver Orthotic Clinics. He’s got you covered with the symptoms and solutions you need to know about.
Diagnosis and Treatment for Shin Splints at Vancouver Orthotics
Shin Splints are usually diagnosed based on your medical history and a physical exam. Involvement in repetitive activities tends to be the trigger. In some cases, an X-ray or other imaging studies can help identify other possible causes for your pain, such as a stress fracture, which is much less common.
Home Treatment for Shin Splints, or Anterior Tibialis Tendonitis
- Rest by taking a break from your normal activities to reduce repetitive strain on the muscles of your lower leg. Your injury needs time to heal and this helps prevent further damage.
- Ice to reduce both pain and inflammation. It feels good doesn’t it?
- Compression apply a light consistent pressure. It feels supportive, right?
- Elevate to help circulation and offer relief
Your rest and modified activity is important. Hands on treatments like chiropractic, RMT massage and acupuncture are also effective. Overall, keep moving, maintain a healthy weight, stretch and improve your overall posture too. Your pain reduction plan might also include stretching and massage.
Beyond the self-care that you can apply instantly, your chiropractic care and orthotic specialist has other options for you. We believe in improving alignment and shock-absorption of the feet and spine as the best approach to treating Shin Splints or Anterior Tibialis Tendonitis.
Here’s a treatment that carries you through every movement of your day: custom orthotics or insoles. Studies show that shock-absorbing insoles can be the most effective way to prevent shin splints, since they promote ideal alignment of the bones and muscles in the feet and ankles, and help to stabilize the foot while running. Poor shock-absorption and alignment of the feet can affect the biomechanics of weight distribution. Custom orthotics can make a huge difference.

What you need to know about sciatica?
Sciatica is nerve pain from an injury or irritation to the sciatic nerve, which originates in your buttock/gluteal area. The sciatic nerve is the longest and thickest (almost finger-width) nerve in the body.
