Flat Feet Considerations (aka Pes Planus or Over-Pronation)
How do I know if I have Flat Feet or Over-Pronation
Flat feet (over-pronation) is typically a genetically pass on however overuse & poor footwear may also be a trigger. The best way to determine your arch status is to have your feet examined. Always assess arch height in the weight bearing position. How many centimeters between the apex of your inside arch and the ground? At or under 3cm? You are over-pronated. Under 1cm? You are likely flat footed. Symptoms may ensure.
Can Foot overpronation be corrected?
Over-pronation is hard to self correct however, there are some foot exercises that can help support and develop a fallen arch. With the use of custom orthotic inserts & supportive footwear, arch height & alignment can be corrected. Non-custom insoles do very little to offer correction.
Why is Flat Feet (Over-Pronation) a bad thing?
Our feet act as shock-absorbers. It’s essential that they help diffuse the load of each step that we take. Poor alignment of the feet and the fallen or flat arch reduce our ability to disperse force and the result is often foot, ankle, knee, hip or back pain.
