Ankle Sprains Try Vancouver Orthotics
Ankle Sprains are one of the most common complaints that presents to our office. Ankle sprains from walking can lead to inside or outside ankle pain or even the front of the ankle joint. Some obvious sources of ankle pain are direct trauma or ankle sprains. Another common cause of ankle pain is chronic postural stress due to mechanical foot inefficiency with each step. Flat or pronated feet are a direct cause of this ankle pain inefficiency. Dr. Michael Horowitz often recommends custom orthotic inserts to treat this biomechanical problem.

TREATING ANKLE SPRAINS
A sprained ankle, ankle sprain, rolled ankle, ankle injury or ankle ligament injury, is a common occurrence where one or more of the ligaments of the ankle is torn or partially torn due to excessive torsional stresses placed on those ligaments. The anterior talofibular ligament is one of the most commonly involved ligaments. Sprains to the lateral aspect of the ankle account for 85% of ankle sprains. These are called “inversion” ankle sprains. These type injuries can happen at any time but are most often seen in sporting activities or where ill-fitted shoes are being worn.

How do you know if ankle injury is serious?
A more severe ankle sprain is characterized by extreme bruising or swelling and an inability to bear weight on the foot without significant pain, or when there doesn’t seem to be any improvement over the first several days after the injury should seek medical attention. It’s important to rule out a fracture or broken bone.
What is the best treatment for a Sprained Ankle?
RICE prevails. Rest is key. Avoid weight bearing activities that cause pain, swelling or discomfort. Ice. Use an ice pack or ice slush bath immediately for 15 to 20 minutes and repeat every two to three hours while you’re awake. Compression. To help stop swelling, compress the ankle with a compression sleeve until the swelling is under control. Elevation while at rest.
