Pain in the arch of the foot can be seen like an impossible obstacle, but we can overcome it
What is arch pain?
Arch pain is the sharp, stabbing pain that occurs mid-foot when you stand for long periods of time with your weight fully on your foot. It is a common complaint, that can affect anyone, not only runners who might put their foot through heavy performance. In fact, it can come on any time that you stand on your feet in shoes that don’t provide ample support. Arch pain is caused by the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a thick tissue that connects the bottom of the foot to the toes. When you stand, the plantar fascia stretches and tightens. Over time, the plantar fascia can become inflamed, irritated, and swollen. This causes pain and can severely disrupt your day-to-day life.
The arches of the foot
The human foot is fascinating. If you’ve ever walked barefoot in the sand, you’ve probably noticed the imprint your foot leaves behind as you step forward. For most adults, there’s a gap on the inner side of the imprint between the ball of the foot and the heel. That’s where the arches of the foot are. (Babies and toddlers don’t have an arch. In fact, children only develop an arch when they’re 3 to 10 years old.)
Each foot has three arches – two longitudinal (lengthwise across the foot) and one transverse (side to side across the foot). The lateral longitudinal arch is on the outside of the foot, while the medial one is on the inside. Together, these two arches support the transverse arch.
What causes pain in the arch of the foot?
Most people with flat feet have pain at some point in their lives. It is a complex condition involving many different factors, but the most common cause of arch pain is the weakening of the arch. The arch is simply a curve in the foot where the bones meet. It’s a natural part of your body and a normal characteristic of all humans. The arch helps the foot absorb shock when you walk or run. The arch can be weakened by many different things. These might be age, injury, flat feet, wearing high heels and more.
Here are a few of the most common causes of arch pain:
Aging: As we age, our bones and muscles can weaken, which can lead to arch pain.
Obesity: Carrying around extra weight puts added strain on our feet, which can cause arch pain.
Pregnancy: The added weight and changes in a woman’s body during pregnancy can lead to arch pain.
Flat feet: If you have flat feet, the lack of support can lead to arch pain.
High heels: Wearing high heels can put extra strain on your feet and lead to arch pain.
What can you do if you have arch pain?
Many treatment options exist. The treatments may have you rest, stretch, strengthen, change your shoe selection, or use non-custom arch supports, custom orthotics, night splints, and anti-inflammatories, or as a last resort- surgery. Usually, these kinds of foot-related problems can be treated successfully by tailoring treatment to an individual’s situation.
Dr. Michael Horowitz & Associates offers a 5-Step process to treating your foot related problems. They can Diagnose & Treat your condition and recommend the best course of action for you.
