“Say No to Drugs” Health Tips from Vancouver Orthotic Clinics
You’ve heard the adage, “Stay in School and “Say no to Drugs”. This month I’d like to talk about a strong belief I have. It is also a core value we have as chiropractors in helping our patients at our clinics. Dr Michael Horowitz here. Your friendly neighborhood Chiropractor in Vancouver and owner of Vancouver Orthotic Clinics. Just say no to drugs and allow me to add “unnecessary surgery, too”. We urge you to not mask the symptoms with a band-aide solution. Rather, our belief is to treat the problem that is giving you pain and discomfort by getting to its source.
Now, with ‘say no to drugs’ I’m not referring to essential lifesaving medications prescribed by your family physician or specialist. I’m talking particularly about elective medications and surgery that may not be necessary or needed as a primary approach to treatment.
In particular, I’m referring to the symptoms you experience related to your musculoskeletal system, your spine, and your feet. I can’t count the number of times I’ve had patients ask me if they should get surgery to fix their back or their foot problems. Don’t we all know someone in our circle who is a regular consumer of NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs? Some people consume these products like they’re candy. Let’s not forget that these medications can cause side effects or additional symptoms that can seriously harm your kidneys, liver and stomach lining.
This month’s tips to support your non-surgical solutions approach are:
- Listen to your body because pain is a red flag worth paying attention to.
- Use common sense and balance in your activities and try to avoid the Weekend Warrior Syndrome where you may be abusing your body or over doing it.
- When you next think about reaching for medication, remember, you’re often just temporarily numbing the pain without addressing the source of the symptoms.
- When you do consider surgery, please consider it as a last resort, not a first step for a final solution.
- Always consult with your primary healthcare practitioner, but be open to a second or even third opinion before making any big decisions.
Lastly, consider a more conservative approach. You may be pleased and surprised how effective it can be. If you find you are frustrated by your aches and pains, such as foot or back pain that is present more days than you’d like to admit, then it might be time to get the support you need.
At Vancouver Orthotic Clinics, that support comes from the ground up. A foot exam at one of our clinics is one step towards giving you better alignment and shock absorption. We start all patients off with a consultation, postural and foot examination.
Ultimately, this leads to a diagnosis and a treatment plan. (Read this month’s tip on non-surgical prevention and care of feet to avoid or treat bunions here)
We use the newest 3D foot and Gait Scan technology and we often recommend a pair of orthotics to fit into your favorite shoes.
