Natural Non-Surgical Bunion and Bunionette Treatment at Vancouver Orthotic Clinics
Are you in pain with growing and inflamed bunions and wondering if there is a non-surgical way to treat your bunions and even reverse the process? Then you are in the right place. At Vancouver Orthotic Clinics located throughout the Mainland as well as on Vancouver Island, we can help. Our practitioners, experienced in biomechanics, analyze the movement and structure of your feet to offer natural bunion relief and treatment, without the use of surgery. Let’s first explore what bunions are all about and how custom orthotic inserts can provide a non-surgical alternative to treatment.
What are bunions and bunionettes?
A bunion is a boney bump that forms on the joint of the big toe. They form when your big toe is pushed up against your other toes, forcing the joint of your big toe to stick out. The skin over the bunion might appear red and sore. The exact cause is unclear, however, bunions may develop as a result of genetics, stress on your foot from wearing shoes that are too small or a medical condition, such as arthritis.
Bunions are often experienced as pain and a round bump that consists of bone and thickened tissue on the side of your distal big toe joint. This may cause displacement and mis-positioning the bones in your foot, creating more pain and biomechanics stress. You might notice your big toe begins to point outward, pushing on the adjacent 2nd and 3rd toe. It develops around the joint and can become fairly large in size. (Tune in here to a short video with Dr. Horowitz on bunions and relief)
Smaller bunions on the outer foot are called bunionettes, and may develop on and around the 5th “baby” toe. While less common than a bunion, bunionettes, or Tailor’s bunions, are caused by the enlargement of that fifth (and last) metatarsal bone.
Symptoms of bunions (Hallux Valgus)
The most common symptom of your bunion is a painful irritation with or without a red swollen bump. The pain could be mild discomfort or severe agony. You may see red blotches, discoloured skin or a bruise around your big toe joint.
Corns or calluses may pop-up around the area where the toes are rubbing together. When you wear shoes or socks, the pain may be more intense. Your shoe may not fit as well as it did before the bunion began appearing.
How custom orthotic inserts can treat and even prevent uncomfortable and painful bunions
- Improper fitting shoes can add to your risk of bunions. High heels and/or a narrow forefoot of your footwear may be aggravating factors.
- Certain types of physical activity may also trigger pain such as running, court sports, dancing and jumping/pivoting activities.
- Your overall foot shape and mis-alignment may lead to bunions.
Why ‘custom’ orthotic inserts help
Store-bought insoles are for generic foot types and provide cushioning. The advantage of custom orthotic inserts is that they fit your foot perfectly and provide a therapeutic response. Being made for your feet – they naturally provide the specific benefits that your feet require. They are the ideal choice for a condition as specific as bunions.
At Vancouver Orthotic Clinics a foot exam to get to the root of the problem includes; a consultation, an Electronic Gait Scan and the newest 3D Foot Scan technology. The analysis leads to a proper diagnosis of your condition and determines your treatment plan. Any recommended pair of custom orthotics can fit into your favorite shoes for daily use.
A custom orthotic insert can relieve and redistribute pressure from the bunion. It can protect the area from rubbing on your socks or shoes. This method alleviates pain and discomfort by stabilizing the foot. The insoles can also help realign your toes to minimize additional calluses from rubbing.
If left untreated, bunions can grow, develop in size and become a bigger issue. The custom orthotic inserts can help prevent that from happening. Best to get to the root of a problem with a professional consultation. It can add to your health and vitality – head to toe by improving your posture and alignment!
Why not enjoy life with less pain and better foot alignment, balance, stability and overall all shock-absorption.
