Vancouver Orthotics spring training tips for active leisure and sport
Hi everyone. With April fun filled start, can we still agree on one thing? Foot pain and back pain are no joke. Dr Michael Horowitz here, your friendly neighborhood chiropractor in Vancouver and the owner of Vancouver Orthotic Clinics.
April Fools might catch us off guard each year, but the presence of foot pain and back pain are no joke. And yet we see so many patients come into our offices with these issues. Spring might be in the air, but some people feel really held back and it doesn’t have to be this way. So our health care team reminds everyone to ease back into your favorite springtime activities and sports.
Spring training tips for everyday and for leisure activity
The nicer weather gets people motivated and excited, but we need to be smart about it.
- Spring training for all of us, whether it be to walk, to hike, to bike or to participate in team sports, should be gradual and methodical and with a build-up in increased time and intensity.
- If we rush or overdo, we risk a sprain strain injury and become a so called ‘weekend warrior’. We commonly see this type of patient at the beginning of each week.
- Save yourself pain and aggravation. Enjoy the nicer weather and get out there and be active and do it injury free.

These two symptoms are directly interconnected. Foot pain and back pain have biomechanics in common, poor alignment of the feet and spine affect, mobility and ease of motion. Ultimately, this may be the source of a pinched nerve that causes pain.

We stand, we walk, we jump, and we bounce all day long. We’re encouraged to walk 10,000 steps a day. If our foot or spine alignment are not effective or efficient, we lose shock absorbing capabilities and dispersion from ground reaction forces. The result is tension and overloading our muscles, joints, ligaments and fascia.
What to do? Remember the foundation to great posture is your alignment. And if you want great posture, you’re going to have to start from the ground up with your feet.
