Avoid pain of Plantar Fasciitis and boost Shock Absorption
Questions patients bring to Vancouver Orthotics and Chiropractic about plantar fasciitis or pain due to poor shock absorption are usually about the correct shoe or orthotics to help. They definitely do help, but they are only part of the solution. Clinic specialists look to the foundation first – the feet. Then they also consider the patient’s posture. The examination and the solution are a ground up process to help each patient out of pain and into easier daily movement and activity.
Let’s look at each of this month’s two featured symptoms in sequence.
Plantar fasciitis heel pain is one of the most common symptoms the clinic’s foot specialists see. This pain tends to be worse in the mornings or when taking your first few steps after prolonged sitting. While the pain is generally localized to the heel or the arch of the foot, it impacts a person fully. It tends to be chronic and it can really slow you down!
Stabbing pain diminishes over the day, but patients often come in with so much pain, it simply won’t go away with only stretching or icing
Who is at greatest risk for pain and suffering from plantar fasciitis?
- People who are overweight. Excess pounds put extra stress on your plantar fascia.
- Exercisers that put extra strain on your heel and attached tissue such as long-distance runners, ballet dancers and aerobic dance can contribute to the onset of plantar fasciitis.
- Have an unusual walk of foot position – flat feet, a high arch or even the way weight is distributed when you’re standing and can add stress.
- People who must stand for long periods of time or on hard surfaces: factory workers, teachers to name two. For some ideas for relief view Dr. Michael’s video here. The 16 min. video walks you through the causes and some of the solutions to plantar fasciitis.
Ignoring plantar fasciitis can result in chronic heel pain. This detracts from your regular activities and may lead to you changing how you walk to avoid plantar fasciitis pain. Soon after you might have foot, knee, hip or back problems.

Why is Shock Absorption Important?
Shock-Absorption is a topic closely related to plantar fasciitis. It is after all the main function of our feet! Shock absorption is a factor at every moment of our movement whether we get those prized 10,000 steps we are encouraged to get in daily or not.
That protection is needed for your feet as they carry you to walk, jump, bounce or even stand still through your day. When it is off it will spoil your foot alignment and that may cause you to lose your feet’s efficiency in weight distribution. It leads to absorbing ground reaction forces – or the brunt of these forces drilling upwards into our muscles, joints, ligaments and fascia!
The result is you in pain. Proper care protects your feet and the rest of you from undue stress.
Expect double trouble without proper shock absorption. It becomes extra important as you increase both the weight coming down on your feet and the velocity as you increase the rate and repetition. Extra cushioning in the shoe is just a part of it. A proper exam will identify where those harmful forces actually originate in your personal structure.
