Spring into the season pain free at Vancouver Orthotic Clinics
Dr. Michael Horowitz here, your Friendly Neighbourhood Chiropractor in Vancouver and the owner of Vancouver Orthotics. Spring is in the air! Aren’t we all so ready to come out of our winter hibernation and the sedentary slump worsened by all the season’s sitting in front of screens as we work at home or seek entertainment? More sitting. Less movement and activity. Read on for some solutions to our seasonal slump coming from our clinics throughout the Lower Mainland of BC as well as Vancouver Island and Whistler.
Enjoy the outdoors
Remember to “Take it Easy!” Ease back into your favourite sports and activities. The nicer weather gets people excited but we need to be smart about it.
Spring training steps are for all of us
Your return to walking, hiking, biking or team sports should be gradual, methodical. Think steady build up to increased time and intensity. Otherwise we risk a sprain/strain injury and becoming a so-called Weekend Warrior. We commonly see this type of patient at the beginning of each week.
Save yourself the pain & aggravation. Enjoy the nicer weather & get out there and be active!
We’ll cover more to help our early spring training folks and our weekend warriors in upcoming posts.
Bonus! Some specialized support information on these topics is featured in our post on symptoms this month. Let’s look at them in brief to help you avoid pain and suffering as you get more active this spring.
1) Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis heel pain has to be our most common symptom we see. This pain tends to be worse in the mornings or when taking your first few steps after prolonged sitting. The pain generally is localized to the heel or the arch of the foot. It tends to be chronic and it can really slow you down!
Some patients come in and they’re just in so much pain and it won’t go away with stretching or icing. To view Dr. Michael’s 16 ways to cure plantar fasciitis click here.
2) Shock-Absorption
After all, isn’t that the main function of our feet anyways? We stand, we walk, we jump, and we bounce. We’re encouraged to walk 10,000 steps a day. However many of us walk with poor foot alignment; what if we’ve lost the efficiency of weight distribution? We may end up absorbing ground reaction forces – and these forces will go into our muscles, joints, ligaments and fascia. This causes Pain!
Please remember that our Feet are the Foundation to Great Posture and Alignment. If you want Great Posture, we’re going to have to start from the ground up, with your Feet.
Consider having a Foot Exam at one of our Vancouver Orthotic Clinics. Our Team offers Diagnosis and Treatment of Flat Feet, Foot pain, Back Pain and of course Plantar Fasciitis. We have invested in the newest 3D Foot and Gait Scan Technology. We often recommend a pair custom orthotics Inserts to fit into your favourite shoes.
