Good posture helps to reduce back pain and stiffness in your joints and muscles
What is posture?
Posture is the overall position in which you hold your body while standing, sitting or lying down. It is often used to describe how someone holds himself or herself, or how someone’s body is positioned relative to the environment they find themselves in. Posture can sometimes also be used to describe the condition of a person’s health.
Good posture and bad posture
Good posture is about maintaining a natural alignment of your joints and muscles. It is about keeping them in the best possible condition so that you are ready to move freely, with good balance and without pain. Bad posture happens when your joints and muscles are out of alignment.
Bad posture can be caused by many things such as: stress, injury, incorrect lifting, incorrect sitting, incorrect exercise, slouching, spending long periods of time on your computer, or even by a genetic condition.
Bad Posture Vs. Back Pain
Bad posture can lead to a number of problems, one of the most common of which is back pain. This is caused by the muscles in the lower back getting tight, while the muscles in the upper back and the shoulders get weak. The reasons for this imbalance may include sitting in a chair for long hours in front of a laptop or at a desk. It may also be the result of incorrect lifting of heavy weights, improper alignment of the body while walking or even sleeping in an awkward position.
Other related problems caused by bad posture: Bad posture also causes tension in the neck, shoulders and upper back. The neck muscles get overworked, which can lead to headaches and an aching neck.
Bad posture also affects the lungs, causing breathlessness and tightness in the chest. It can also lead to heartburn and acid reflux, as well as digestive issues like constipation and indigestion. In addition to all that, bad posture can affect your mood. It can add to your feeling angry, sad, anxious and depressed. It can also make you more irritable and even provoke mood swings.
