Step lively and well into the holiday season! Take care of yourself heels to head at Vancouver Orthotic Clinics with convenient locations in BC’s Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. Use your Extended Health Care Benefits before they expire and let them get to work helping you to better posture and with it a brighter outlook. In today’s post we look at how you can avoid heel pain, heel spurs and what you need to know about ICBC’s coverage if you are in a motor vehicle accident (MVA) and sustain soft tissue injuries.
What causes heel pain?
Did you know your heel is the largest bone in your foot, and its only one of 26 bones that make up your foot and ankle? In addition there are 33 joints and more than 100 tendons supporting a part of your body that takes you everywhere you want to go in life!
You can see why Vancouver Orthotic Clinics say your feet are the foundation of good posture so your good health starts from the ground up!
Now imagine all that potential pressure through your weight bearing joints as you walk or run those 5,000-10,000 steps as part of your daily movement plan.
As a result you might experience heel pain or discomfort from heel spurs. Each step you take either helps or harms depending on whether your feet are in good alignment and biomechanics so that your steps are working with ease or efficiency.
Several common causes of heel pain are:
- Plantar fasciitis – when too much pressure on your feet damages the plantar fascia ligament, causing pain and stiffness.
- Sprains and strains – which are minor to severe injuries that result from physical activity.
- Fractures – broken bones constitute a medical emergency
- Achilles tendonitis – is the pain due to inflammation of the tendon that attaches calf muscles to the heel that comes with strain and overuse
- Bursitis, arthritis and other less common yet painful and concerning medical conditions can cause heel pain.
What causes heel spurs?
Your body responds to stress and strain on your foot on your foot ligaments and tendons. It may create a heel spur or bony growth that pokes out from the bottom of your heel and that will impact your gait or ability to balance and walk, or irritate the ligament running between your heel and the ball of your foot. About 15% of people are affected by heel spurs. Yet, we can be unaware of what is developing until we have heel pain.
How Vancouver Orthotic Clinics help with your heel pain and heel spurs
Feeling heel pain is incredibly uncomfortable and yet we see people coming into our clinics after suffering for weeks or months. Their heel pain is often worse in the morning or when they are standing up or after sitting. In some cases, each step just plain hurts.
People often suffer with heel pain for weeks if not months, but there’s no need! The team at Vancouver Orthotic Clinics helps patients looking for relief yet wanting to avoid surgery or cortisone shots.
Symptoms such as heel pain or heel spurs may develop due to poor shock-absorption from your feet or footwear. Since at Vancouver Orthotic Clinics we look at your health from the ‘Ground Up’ – we recommend you come in to get a proper exam and diagnosis.
Heel Spurs can be successfully treated with the support of custom orthotic inserts.
Custom orthotic inserts can help alleviate the inflammation and over time the heel spur will resolve (reabsorb) itself. Heel spur pads are often included with the inserts to provide extra support and cushioning.
