Get Help for Metatarsalgia and Poor Posture for Pain-Free-Living
Getting out of pain and back into alignment are two of the reasons patients visit Vancouver Custom Orthotics and Chiropractic care with Dr. Michael Horowitz. At his Hycroft office on Granville and numerous Orthotic Clinic locations in Greater Vancouver, patient care starts at our foundation, our feet. Today’s post is about foot pain related to Metatarsalgia and then heads up to care of our spine to explore the power of our posture.
What is Metatarsalgia?
Simply put, Metatarsalgia is ball of the foot pain. It is often confused with other conditions, because the term is used to refer to any painful foot condition affecting the metatarsal region of the foot. This common problem can affect the joints and bones of the metatarsals. In this case the foot pain or top of foot pain sits in the metatarsal arch and it is localized to the first metatarsal head (the ball of the foot just behind the big toe).
There are two small sesamoid bones under the first metatarsal head. So, the next most frequent site of metatarsal head pain is under the second metatarsal. This can be due to either too short a first metatarsal bone or to “hypermobility of the first ray” resulting in excess pressure being transmitted into the second metatarsal head.

How to Treat Ball of Foot Pain of Metatarsalgia?
First, let’s identify what symptoms are most commonly affiliated with metatarsalgia.
Patients who are experiencing ball of foot pain diagnosed as metatarsalgia may be on their feet all day walking. Their pain could be numbness or an ache.
Definitely get properly assessed for foot pain.
Dr. Michael Horowitz takes patients experiencing foot pain through a 5-step process to successful treatment of Metatarsalgia. It begins with a proper evaluation and diagnosis of your condition and is followed by a recommend best course of action for you. Catch the 2-minute video on the steps here.
During the consultation, a foot specific examination includes a 3D gait scan. Your doctor is looking for signs of a collapsed metatarsal arch to see where we can help the problem. The recommendation may result in a pair of custom orthotics designed to help and to fit into your favourite shoes.
Being pain free is assisted by your paying attention to your body head to toe. So now we move ground up from care of your foundation, your feet, to focus upwards on your spine for your best moves about good posture.
Avoid poor posture and listen closely to your body for these symptoms:
- Headache
- Rounded shoulders
- Potbelly
- Head that either leans forward or backward
- Back pain
- Body aches and pains
- Muscle fatigue
Having poor posture can interfere with your body’s postural mechanisms such as muscle strength and length and essential feedback from your nervous system for things as basic to your everyday comfort and safety as your body’s position in space.
Proper posture will give you energy and support. You’ll find that you can work, play and enjoy life with more vitality. Maintaining good posture should feel effortless. That old advice we all grew up with about shoulders back and chest out may feel unnatural.
Take time to observe your body and get a proper assessment rather than overlooking muscle tension or fatigue and simply getting used to it. See your chiropractor and orthotics specialist for proper care, ground up. Vancouver Orthotic Clinics has locations throughout the Lower Mainland to help with your posture or your pain head to toe.
For tips to improve your posture in everyday activity:
- Reverse the curve such as stretching back the opposite way from hunching over your desk.
- Stretch two or three times a week to boost muscle flexibility. Stretch neck muscles daily.
- Exercise regularly to tone muscles and improve strength.
- Keep abdominal muscles strong to support your lower back.
Don’t let poor posture get the best of you and make you slouch, have poor digestion, suffer headaches and get the dreaded text neck.
