Skip Weekend Warrior Syndrome Pain at Vancouver Orthotic Clinics
Are you a Weekend Warrior? Do you attack the weekend with enthusiasm BUT perhaps some reckless abandon? Can’t wait for the weekend to begin but often overexert your unconditioned or untrained body so you tend to suffer a sprain or strain injury – most notably on Monday morning?
Hi everyone, Dr. Michael Horowitz, Your Friendly Neighbourhood Chiropractor in Vancouver. And the owner of Vancouver Orthotic Clinics!
This month we talk about that Weekend Warrior Syndrome and I have a confession. I’ve been a Weekend Warrior for years! Like many of you, when the sun is out and the weekend is here, I like to get moving! The problem is I often over-do it! Too much of a good thing can lead to a bad thing. In this case I’m referring to those Monday morning blues…. when the body rejects the excessive activities from the past weekend.
When we fall victim to Weekend Warrior Syndrome; we are in essence abusing ourselves by putting our unconditioned or deconditioned body through a high degree of repetitive stress and strain. Over time, abuse leads to chronic pain syndromes which are then far more difficult to treat.
Common injuries that can occur with infrequent or inconsistent exercise are:
- Achilles Tendonitis or inflammation of the ankle heel bone attachment.
- Tendonitis in other areas of the body
- Muscle Strains, Joint Sprains
- Shin splints
- Shoulder or rotator cuff injuries
- Low Back and neck pain to name a few.
You may wake up and feel that back pain, knee stiffness, a tender shoulder or have a pair of super sore feet! You can feel it from head to toe. No muscle, joint, ligament or tendon, can hide from the all too common, Weekend Warrior Syndrome. Please, “use your body but don’t ABUSE your body!”
We especially feel this as we start to get more active. The spring and summer season is a time of higher levels of motivation and it’s easy to get caught up in the rush to fun and fitness.
In my tips this Month for All You Would Be Weekend Warriors I recommend that you:
- Plan your activity before the weekend begins
- Make sure to warm-up and warm-down from activity
- Increase exercise intensity gradually and progressively.
- Avoid taking over-the-counter medication to mask pain and then overuse your body
- Stay hydrated, eat well and get enough rest
- Don’t forget about wearing the right footwear and your custom orthotics as well!
Why not avoid the Weekend Warrior Syndrome? Make exercise and movement part of your everyday life. Be moderate to avoid those common injuries associated with “binge” exercising.
If you are frustrated by your aches and pains, then by all means get the Support you need.
At Vancouver Orthotic Clinics that support comes from the Ground Up! For better Alignment and Shock-Absorption consider having a Foot Exam at one of our clinics.
We start all patients off with a consultation, postural, foot and spine examination. Ultimately,
This leads us to a Diagnosis and Treatment plan. We use the newest 3D Foot & Gait Scan
Technology. We often recommend a pair Custom Orthotic Inserts to fit into your favourite shoes.
