FOOT PAIN from FLAT FEET? FIND HELP in VANCOUVER HERE
Hi everybody. Dr. Michael Horowitz here, Your Friendly Neighborhood Chiropractor and owner of Vancouver Orthotic Clinics. Have you made strides into the New Year? For some of us with flat feet or a tendency to pronate, we’ve felt the effects of each of those steps, in pain! Do you have this pain or perhaps feel that your performance is affected as you walk, or participate in fitness activity that involves moving quickly and smoothly on your feet? If this is your situation or someone you know, then you need to know what’s happening, and what you can do to help yourself out of pain and into better movement. Read on!
Flat feet and overpronation are synonymous terms so let’s dive into it and understand it all better.
What does it really mean to have flat feet?
- A flat foot refers to a degree of ‘fallingness’ of the medial longitudinal arch.
- Genetics does tend to play a primary role in arch height, however, poor footwear and time can cause a progression. If a foot is flat it generally lacks an arch with enough shock absorption and this can lead to an accumulation of ‘foot on the ground’ pressure when you step down on it fully.
- The term overpronation comes into play with the arch coming down as weight is put on it and the foot rolls inward with the movement. Everyone pronates to some degree as they move because this action is part of your body’s way of absorbing shock as you walk or run.
- When you pronate more than normal, we call it overpronation, and you may be at risk for injury. Why? Because it can alter the timing and direction of natural forces on the foot and leg.
How orthotics can help
Wearing orthotics, the customized inserts to slip into your shoes, allows for more comfort and support to your feet and to our arches. It helps to minimize the impact of the way you walk.
A foot examination and prescription for custom orthotics may go a long way to avoid unnecessary wear and tear on your arches and also your weight bearing joints. So best to start by treating the source of the problem. You can have your feet examined with our Electronic Gait Scan & the newest 3D Foot Scanning technology at Vancouver Orthotic Clinics and get a proper diagnosis.
You may be a candidate for better foot alignment, balance, stability and overall all shock-absorption. All this may also help improve your posture. A proper foot examination leads to a proper diagnosis and then a treatment strategy to help you get out of pain.
Some of the improvements you might find are:
- Increased support of your arch in standing
- Control of the degree of pronation with walking or running.
- Determining what to do if you have either flat feet or overpronation but not both at the same time and find your activity is affected when you put more force on your feet as you run.
One of the chiropractic team members can help prescribe both exercises and custom orthotic inserts to fit into your favourite shoes.
Our team is ready to recommend options to relieve pain and prevent (re) injury.
